Tink Labs recently raised US$125 million of funding to roll-out its ‘handy’ devices - free smartphones - across hotels around the world.

LONDON, UK – 30 MARCH 2017: Tink Labs Limited – the developer of ‘handy’, a free smartphone device for hotel rooms – has announced today that it is on schedule to be in 1 million hotel rooms around the world by the end of the year. The target is a stepping stone towards handy being present in every hotel room globally.

handy devices take away the frustrations related to both extortionate roaming charges and challenges around finding the best restaurants or hotspots that only the locals know about. Hotel guests – who typically spend 80% of their time outside the hotel – will be able to take handy out of the hotel, allowing hoteliers to stay connected to guests throughout the guests’ stay and offer them more services to make their visit special.

“We’ve been seeing a rapid uptake of handy devices and are on track to exceed our global expansion plans for the year of placing units in 1 million hotel rooms.” said Terence Kwok, CEO and founder of Tink Labs. “Hotel guests enjoy being able to make free calls, while receiving insights that allow them to live like a local. Meanwhile, hoteliers benefit from being able to stay connected to – and improve the experience of – their guests, resulting in increased sales of hotel services.”

As part of Tink Labs’ global expansion, the company aims to have its devices in 500,000 European hotel rooms, a quarter of which will be in UK, by the end of the year. The company has already established a series of partnerships with major hotels including IHG, Sheraton, Novotel, Mercure, Intercontinental, Ritz London, Crowne Plaza, and Holiday Inn.  To date, handy is already available in 20 major cities, being used by nearly 25% of London’s hotels, and has helped 12 million global travellers stay connected.

“Having deployed handy across all of our hotels over the past six months, I’m happy to say that it’s succeeded in both enhancing our guests’ experience and unlocking new revenue opportunities for us. Our guests can rest easy knowing that they’re in good hands when looking for places to go or things to do, and we can involve ourselves in helping them more than ever. It’s a virtuous cycle, really – increased engagement begets better service, greater income, and ultimately a deeper understanding of how we can work best for our guests.” - Ramesh Arora, Managing Director, The Montcalm Hotel.

Beyond connecting visitors, handy helps local hoteliers differentiate and unleash untapped revenue potential, creating a personalised experience to retain customers. Consumer usage has demonstrated that handy extends the hotel service footprint and increases the use of hotel services, boosting incremental revenues by approximately 20 percent on average.

handy’s complimentary services enable visitors to travel like a local, with connectivity and access to the information they need – including curated city guides, free unlimited local and international calls, free internet access, speed dial to hotel services, and local emergency and essential travel information – all at no extra cost.

As one of the top three largest start-ups in Hong Kong, Tink Labs raised US$125 million in its latest round of funding to expand globally, with investors including FIH Mobile, Sinovation Ventures and Cai Wensheng.
